3,000 police for Bangkok Countdown

At least 3,000 police will be deployed around the CentralWorld shopping plaza in Bangkok for the annual New Year Countdown celebration.

Metropolitan police spokesman Pol Maj Gen Adul Narongsak said barriers will be put up around the site to control traffic and  metal detectors will be in use to screen revellers.

Organisers and the mall management had been asked to place security guards at all entrances and exits surrounding the event area, and to inspect all suspicious vehicles. Police would also be placed on highrise buildings in the vicinity to guard against any possible attack from projectile weapons.

Police checkpoints would be set up along the outer perimeter to control traffic in and out of the New Year celebration, he said.

National police chief Pol Gen Adul Sangsingkaew on Friday ordered all Bangkok police to perform their duties vigorously and ensure public safety during the New Year holidays and to disseminate information on how people could protect themselves from criminals.

Pol Gen Adul also asked for cooperation from the press in keeping the public up to date on crime and traffic information.

He said there had been no reports to date of any attack in the planning. However, all city police were strictly prohibited from taking leave over the New Year, to reassure people in the capital they would be safe.
