TAO vehicle attacked, driver shot

The driver of a tambon administration organisation (TAO) vehicle was seriously wounded when a gunman attacked a pickup carrying five local officials in Narathiwat's Rangae district on Wednesday, police said.

Pol Lt Pichitsak Hatthapanit, the duty officer at Rangae police station, said the attack occurred about 12.20pm on a road at Ban Bango Sato, about 400 metres from the Bango Sato TAO office.

Mayali Salae, 38, deputy chairman of the Bango Sato TAO, said while he and four other TAO officials were leaving the office in a pick-up truck, driven by Haripan Khatai, 33, for a New Year party in Muang district, they were followed by two men on a motorcycle.

The pillion rider fired one shot with a handgun at the vehicle from the front, breaking the glass windshield, but no one was hurt.  The gunman then fired another shot through the right window, hitting the driver in the back of his head.

Mr Haripan was seriously wounded and rushed to Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Hospital.

Mr Mayali and three other officials were not hurt.
