'Dangerous week' road death toll reaches 254

The death toll from road accidents rose to 254 on the fifth day of the "dangerous week" of the New Year holidays.

Assistant national police chief Pol Lt Gen Ruangsak Jaritake reported that 2,351 road accidents have taken place across Thailand _ leaving 2,454 injured and 254 dead _ between Dec 27 and Monday, the first five days of the "Seven Dangerous Days" period, which ends today.

The highest number of road accidents took place in Chiang Mai, with 104 reported, while Nakhon Pathom recorded the highest number of deaths at 12.

Drink driving remains the main cause of the accidents, the officer said.
