Is Renting For You?

According to Roomorama.com, customers want to book as quickly as possible when they find something they like.

But the waiting time to book an apartment or a house is still a few hours, and this can be nerve-wracking for someone who is used to instant confirmation when booking a hotel.

"Travellers are looking for accommodations with amenities like a living room, kitchen, free Wi-Fi and laundry facilities," said Jia En Teo, the website's co-founder.

More than just the price, customers look at the following factors:

- Value for money: Even when a Roomorama property costs the same or slightly more than a hotel room, it offers amenities such as a kitchen, a washer, a dryer and free Wi-Fi, etc. These are home comforts that a hotel cannot offer. And in the end they save guests money, as they can do their own laundry, cook their own meals and not have to pay a daily Wi-Fi fee.

- Location, location, location: Roomorama's customers are typically working professionals, small groups and families. They want properties that are fairly central and easy to reach. Hence, Roomorama focuses on acquiring properties that are very central, especially in the large urban areas.

- A unique experience: Travellers these days are tired of the cookie-cutter chain hotels. They want to stay somewhere unique with a bespoke charm but without the high price tag. Hence, Roomorama sees more and more travellers booking cool, designer properties they cannot find elsewhere or properties that offer a peek into the local culture and lifestyle.

"Short-term rentals are becoming more of a mainstream option for travellers when they look for accommodation. As budget airlines make travel much more affordable around the world, travellers in turn will look for more value-for-money, unique accommodations as well," said Ms Jia.
