Strauss operetta reset in contemporary Bangkok

Later this month, students from Mahidol University's College of Music will be staging a short run of Die Fledermaus, the light-hearted, three-act operetta by Johann Strauss.

A new version of Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus will be staged at Mahidol University later this month.

Full of disguises, tricks and lovely tunes, this oft-performed masterpiece tells of the revenge wreaked by Dr Falke on his friend Gabriel von Eisenstein.

For the Mahidol production, the setting has been changed from Vienna in 1890 to Bangkok in 2012 and several other little twists have been added to the hilarious plot. The operetta will be directed by Pattarasuda Anuman Rajadon who has previously supervised

such productions as Dido & Aeneas, The Threepenny Opera and Il Campanello.

Providing engaging music will be a 40-piece orchestra conducted by Pamornpan Komolpamorn.

Die Fledermaus will be staged at Mahidol University's College of Music on Jan 17, 18 and 19, starting at 7pm, with an additional 2pm matinee on Jan 18. Tickets cost 150, 250, 500, 750 and 1,000 baht. Call 02-800-2525_34 ext 153/4 for more information.
