The pickup truck was severely damaged and overturned in the accident, which occurred in front of the Central City and Big C department stores.

The 10 passengers, all contracters, were injured and were taken to nearby Bang Na 1 and Thai Nakarin hospitals. A one-year-old boy was also hurt.

The injured suffered minor head wounds, broken limbs and lacerations, hospital staff said. They were discharged shortly after.

The pickup truck came into collision with the 18-wheel gas tanker, belonging to AP Solution. Police and emergency workers found it parked in the left lane 50 metres away. Its front bumper was torn off and there was a dent on the body. A broken off piece of the carryboy on the pickup had also pierced the windshield of the passenger cabin.

The tanker driver, 41-year-old Tiwa Wongyoon, told police that he was transporting gas from a depot to Suphan Buri province when he was cut off by the pickup truck, which was trying to exit the centre highway at high speed. The two vehicles collided and the pickup rolled over.

Police said the pickup driver, Arkhom Kongton, 30, was hurt and could not yet be questioned. Insurance representatives had been contacted. The investigation into the accident was continuing.
