Crystal babies 'unsafe' new toy

A new toy, "Crystal Babies", which would be dangerous to young children if swallowed, has become popular among primary school students in Chon Buri province, according to a report in the Daily News.

A reporter was contacted by parents and teachers of a school in Chon Buri's Muang district after the toys were found in the possession of many students.

Crystal Babies are made from a jelly-like substance that expands when put in water, and has similar characteristics to a toy that was banned in the past.

A vendor was found selling them to children in front of the school, the report said.

A box of crystal babies contained seven pieces of small, multicolored pill-like objects. When put in water, the pill expands to the size of a ping pong ball, or larger, and glows like a crystal.

Daily News reported that the toys contained no label, how to play guide, or even authorised label to produce or sell.

Parents and teachers were concerned that the toys are small and easily ingested by children. If swallowed it could be fatal.

Teachers at the school have enforced a ban on the toy at the school, however, they were worried that with many vendors selling them, it is hard to control the spread of the toys outside of the grounds.

Therefore they alerted the media to help people to understand the danger of playing with the toy. They said they hoped authorities would take measures to prevent the sale of the crystal babies to young people.

The report also said that crystal babies are becoming popular among youths in Chon Buri.
