TRANG: Police arrested five members of a motorcycle theft gang, the province’s biggest, and confiscated 14 stolen bikes worth about 540,000 baht on Thursday.
The arrests came after police launched an investigation to identify and eradicate a gang of thieves responsible for stealing 60 motorcycles from residents in Muang and Yan Ta Khao districts between October and December last year, said Pol Col Thammanoon Traitippayapong, deputy commander of Trang provincial police.
Most of the seized bikes, which were destined for sale in neighbouring countries, were Honda Wave and Yamaha Fino models for which there is a high demand on the black market, he said
The suspects told police they would scout residential neighbourhoods and target motor bikes whose owners left the key in the ignition. They sold the bikes for 6,000 baht. Stolen bikes without keys were worth 3,000 baht each.
The gang said they hired a driver to deliver the bikes to an agent in Phatthalung province from where they would be sent to Songkhla before being smuggled out of the country by sea.
Police are looking for 10 more members of the gang, Pol Col Thammanoon added.
