Unfaithful environment officials set to be transferred in reshuffle

Infidelity in the ranks will see several senior officials in the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry sent to less tempting pastures in an upcoming reshuffle.

Ministry permanent secretary Chote Trachu said that while many of the planned transfers are routine, others were the result of problems arising from extramarital affairs.

The wives of some officials complained of their husbands' behaviour.

In some cases, the aggrieved wives told ministry officials, their husbands were maintaining three or four mistresses.

Mr Chote said such comments were commonplace at the ministry

He said none of the wives had filed a formal complaint against their husbands to initiate disciplinary inquiries.

''They don't want their men sacked,'' Mr Chote said.

The permanent secretary said he had not issued any warnings against particular officials. It was brought up as a reminder at meetings occasionally.

''It is a private affair. It requires consent from both parties. I think forestry and natural park officials know the difference between right and wrong,'' Mr Chote said.

Manophat Huamuangkaew, director-general of the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, said he was not concerned about his workers' extramarital relationships as long as they did not affect their work.

''Wives or girlfriends, they must not meddle with work. If it becomes the case, I won't tolerate it,'' he said.

Damrong Pidech, the department's former chief, admitted affairs had occurred among park officials and some incidents had turned into a scandal. ''I think it happens in every sector. It is something people don't talk about,'' he said.

Last March, Mr Damrong announced a ''no boss's woman zone'' policy after receiving complaints concerning wives and girlfriends, which he said could impact their work. He also said it was not uncommon for wives and mistresses to fight, which embarrassed the department.
