Veteran cop commits suicide

NAKHON PATHOM – A veteran policeman shot and killed himself in a fit of depression after a promotion he did not want was forced upon him, according to a report.

Police found the body of Pol Sen Sgt Maj Boonthana Sudrod, 55, at his home in Nong Ngu Luem district on Monday, along with his discharged pistol.

His wife told police her husband had felt under a lot of pressure ever since he learned he was in line for promotion to the rank of police sub-lieutenant .

He had been dodging his promotion for two years by refusing to attend the required courses. After being pressured by his superiors, he finally obliged.

“He has been depressed since he was forced to accept his new rank. He was not good with computers and his new rank required him to master this skill,” his wife told police.

“He was afraid that he was too old for the job and did not want to be a laughing stock at the station,” she added.

Pol Lt Gen Phetcharat Seangchai, superintendent of Nakhon Pathom police, said Pol Sen Sgt Maj Boonthana was a good officer, very good at his job, and deserved to be promoted.

He knew that Pol Sen Sgt Maj Boonthana was not happy about the promotion but he had no idea he might commit suicide, the provincial police chief admitted.
