Serial post office robbers caught

A married couple has confessed to robbing about 20 post offices in at least 10 provinces after being arrested in Ayutthaya province, Provincial Police Region 7 commander Harnpol Nitwiboon said on Friday.

Pol Maj Gen Harnpol held a press briefing to announce the arrest of Wichai Sawangyart, 29, and his wife, Somkid Chuenrutai, 20.

The couple were apprehended on Wednesday along with stolen cash and othr loot, and two pistiols, one .38 and one .22 calibre, at a village in Ayutthaya's Bang Sai district.

They have been charged with multiple armed robberies and unauthorised possession of firearms and ammunition.

On Nov 30, the two suspects purportedly heldup post office staff in tambon Bang Luang, Bang Len district in Nakhon Pathom province at gunpoint. They made away with more than 130,000 baht in cash. After the robbery,  police formed a team to hunt them down. 

The couple also robbed other post offices and convenience stores in surrounding areas where there was no security present.

The two have confessed to about 20 robberies but denied having hurt anyone, Pol Maj Gen Harnpol said. The money got from the holdups had been spent mostly on drugs, he added.
