Blazes ravage mall, turf club

Fire swept through a shopping mall and ravaged a historic workers' living quarters at the Royal Turf Club in separate incidents yesterday.

The first blaze broke out about 3am at Zeer Rangsit shopping mall in Lam Luk Ka district of Pathum Thani province. No one was injured. The fire started inside a makeshift warehouse beside the mall's main building. The warehouse was used to keep goods and stalls.

The stored goods included gas cylinders which exploded during the fire.

The blaze spread to the first floor of the Zeer Rangsit mall, which houses mobile phone shops, commercial bank branches and a supermarket.

Some guests of the Asia Airport Hotel on the 10th floor of the mall fled downstairs during the fire.

In another incident, 10 wooden houses inside the compound of the Royal Turf Club in Dusit district were destroyed in a blaze which started at one of the houses about 4pm yesterday. About 20 horses were removed from a nearby stable for safety. The centuries-old houses provided accommodation for some of the club's workers, authorities said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about one hour. No one was injured.

Police are still investigating the cause of both fires.
