Child prostitution gang busted

BANGKOK - Several underage girls have been taken into custody and two "mamasans" arrested on charges of child prostitution.

City police chief Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit Thupkrachang announced the arrests at the Bangkok Metropolitan Police Headquarters, on Wednesday.

Police received a tip that a gang running child prostitutes was operating in Thung Kru district, set up a sting operation and lured out the mamasan, he told reporters.

Police arrested Nok Thonglek, 23, and another mamasan whose name was withheld because she is a minor.

Nine young girls were also taken into police custody. They are aged between 14 and 16 years. All are Thai nationals.

Ms Nok admitted to act as a pimp to help the girls get in touch with clients, Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit said.

She told police that the girls get about 1,500 baht each time for their services. She and the other mamasan get a cut of 500 baht from the girls.

Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit said police will also arrest the people using this child prostitution service.
