Phitsanulok airport annoyed by jumbos

PHITSANULOK - The provincial airport wants two Boeing 747s left standing in the one spot for several years to be moved away to clear the air strip for other planes.

Director of Phitsanulok Airport Kasem Intasorn called on police to quickly wrap up their investigation of the two decommissioned planes belonging to Orient Thai as the airport needs the parking space.

The two 747s were parked there in 2008. The airline asked permission from the airport in August last year to put up a message reading "This plane is to be donated for educational purposes" on their bodies.

The signs have piqued the curiosity of passengers flying in and out of the central province, many of them taking pictures before leaving the airport.

The engines of both planes have been removed and Orient Thai pays the airport 70,000 baht for parking fees each month.

The two planes were investigated in March 2011 because Crime Suppression Division police suspected parts were being secretly sold to avoid taxes.

The police have not pressed charges against the airline but have ordered the airport not to move the planes until the case is finalised.
