Royal slur earns Jeng two years in prison

Prominent red-shirt Yossawaris Chuklom, alias Jeng Dokchik, has been sentenced to two years' jail for lese majeste.

Jeng: Insists he’s loyal to the King

The Criminal Court yesterday sentenced Mr Yossawaris, an adviser to the deputy commerce minister and leading member of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), for a speech he gave in 2010.

Mr Yossawaris made a speech on a UDD stage on March 29, 2010. The court agreed with prosecutors that part of it was lese majeste, in violation of Article 112 of the Criminal Code and Sections 2, 8 and 12 of the charter.

The court found him guilty and sentenced him to three years in jail, commuted to two years without suspension because his testimony was useful.

Mr Yossawaris said he had not intended to commit lese majeste.

Mr Yossawaris's lawyer, Thamrong Lakdaeng, put up 500,000 baht to secure his bail, which the court granted.
