CHACHOENGSAO : Veteran Prayad Marksaeng and young star Gunn Charoenkul fired six-under-par 66s to share the first-round lead at the Sunrise Lagoon Thailand Masters yesterday.

Prayad, 46, and Gunn, 24, made seven birdies and a bogey at Sunrise Lagoon and Country Club in the 3-million-baht ThaiPGA season opener.

A stroke behind on third was Asian Tour No.1 Thaworn Wiratchant who got five birdies in a bogey-free round.

Lownaphum Navisthrira, Pawin Inkhapradit, Khanchai Tannin, Donlaphatchai Niyomchon and Udorn Duangdecha shared fourth on 68s.

Prayad, who has won six Asian Tour and three Japan Golf Tour titles, managed to post only one-under on his front nine, starting from the 10th hole, before making five birdies on the back nine.

"It was so windy on the first nine holes and I missed two short birdie putts," he said.

"The greens were also difficult to read."

The Hua Hin native said that he would still focus on the Japan Golf Tour this year but was not sure when he would start his 2013 campaign there.

"Many big events will be held at the same time and I have not yet decided on my schedule," he said.

Panuwat Muenlek fired an ace at the 218-yard, par-three 17th hole to get 20,000 baht.

The prize for a hole-in-one in the final two rounds is a Toyota Camry.

Amateur Paradorn Srichapan, a former top-10 tennis player in the world, had a round to forget on his debut in a competitive golf match when he scored a 91 without a single birdie.

He made the turn at 50 with two bogeys, three double bogeys and two triple bogeys and improved on the back nine with five bogeys for 41.

Meanwhile, Thai hopeful Supamas Sangchan fired a second-round 75 for 145 yesterday to remain second at the Philippine Ladies Open amateur tournament.

She was two shots behind local star Dottie Ardina who shot a 72 for 143.
