Five die in 10-car pileup

An accident involving 10 vehicles sparked spectacular fires and killed five people Saturday night on the Mittraphap Highway in Klang Dong district of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Police said they got first reports of the pile-up at around 9pm, and rushed to the scene. Officers found a BMW on fire, and called firemen. It took nearly half an hour to extinguish the blaze, after which three charred bodies were found. Police said they believed all were members of the same family.

Another two dead people found in a delivery truck carrying dairy products. Four survivors of the accident were taken to nearby hospitals.

Preliminary investigations by police indicated that a Mercedes Benz, travelling at high speed, cut in front of a 24-wheel tractor-trailer on a downhill slope. The driver of the big rig was unable to slow in time, and slammed into the Benz. The BMW then hit the skidding truck from the rear, and a pileup occurred behind the BMW.

The accident caused heavy traffic for several kilometres on Mittraphap Road as officials took more than three hours to move bodies, the injured and all vehicles from the scene.
