Alfonso Scarano will wield the baton and the Katona Twins will wield their guitars when they team up with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra later this week.

The orchestra is presenting two concerts entitled "From Piazzolla to Sibelius" at Mahidol University's College of Music, Salaya campus, on Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 4pm.

Scarano, the Italian guest conductor, is back for a performance of Jean Sibelius' Symphony No.1 in E Minor, Opus 39, while the Katona Twins will present Astor Piazzolla's Double Concerto For Two Guitars And Orchestra.

The programme also includes Joaquin Rodrigo's Concerto Madrigal For Two Guitars And Orchestra as well as Thai traditional music.

The Hungarian-born twins, Peter and Zoltan Katona, are critically acclaimed as one of the world's best-known classical guitar duos and give recitals in the major concert venues throughout the world.

The twins, who now live in Liverpool, England, have won international prizes at major competitions in New York, London, Germany, France and Hungary. They are currently artists in residence in San Francisco.

The duo's wide repertoire spans from Bach, Piazzolla's tango music to their own arrangements of pop classics. Their programmes also include concertos for two guitars and orchestra by Rodrigo, Vivaldi, Piazzolla and Tedesco.

Several contemporary composers have written for and dedicated works to the Katona Twins.

They studied in Budapest, Frankfurt and in London, and have recorded for the BBC and other television and radio stations.
