Street gangster on drugs charge

A former member of the criminal street gang Oros is among those arrested for dealing in illegal drugs, as police move to crack down on the notorious Thon Buri gang.

Metropolitan Police chief Kamronwit Thoopkrachang said at a press briefing on Tuesday that police arrested eight drug suspects and seized drugs and a 9mm Glock pistol.

Among those apprehended was Pongthorn Panthong, 23, who was formerly known as Arm Oros when he was a member of the infamous gang. The other suspects were his henchmen.

Mr Pongthorn admitted to police that after being convicted on a drug charge and imprisoned he was released in March last year. He got into a row with his old gang and decided to set up his own drug dealing operation. He also admitted to having bought the Glock from a friend for 55,000 baht, according to police.

Pol Lt Gen Chayuth Rattana-ubon, commander of Metropolitan Police Bureau 9, said a team of investigators had been tracking the suspects because members of Oros were still active on the Thon Buri side of Bangkok.

Oros recently drew public attention after one of its members posted videos on Youtube showing him doing drugs and challenging rival gangs to a brawl. The police are looking to round up the remnants of the gang.

Pol Maj Gen Kamronwit said an investigation is also underway into a claim made by a gang member in the video that he had shot at a police officer. The chief of Bangkok police has ordered police to bring all of them in.
