Songkhla murder suspect freed on bail

SONGKHLA – The provincial court on Wednesday granted bail to the chairman of the Songkhla Provincial Administration Organisation (PAO) arrested on a charge of hiring hitmen to kill Songkhla municipality mayor Peera Tantiserane last Novermber.

Uthit Chuchuay was freed on bail after his lawyer offered 5 million baht as collateral. The court accepted his bail request and lowered the collateral to 3 million baht.

Mr Uthit was arrested at his house on Na San Road in Muang district on Tuesday.

The PAO chief is the fifth suspect arrested in the murder case. The others are Niwat Rattanakaew, Paisal Nuphan, Chuan Muadmee and Kitti Chuchuay, who is Mr Uthit’s younger brother.

Police accused Mr Niwat, Mr Paisal and Mr Chuan of being hitmen hired by Mr Uthit and his brother, who has also been released on bail.

Police are hunting down five more suspects including four accomplices and a mastermind of the Nov 7 drive-by shooting, who is reportedly Mr Uthit’s relative.
