BELIEF

Why were some villagers in tambon Tha Sawang in Surin province hanging red shirts in front of their homes?

A)Because they were proudly displaying their political preferences.

B)Because that's how people dry shirts.

C)Because red shirts are festive.

D)Because they were attempting to ward off a "widow ghost" that was rumoured to have killed 10 supposedly healthy men in the village. The mysterious deaths began in December, and villagers said the 10 men had either died in their sleep, or dropped dead while walking. Doctors said all the men died from respiratory failure. A medium hired by villagers said the ghost, known as "pee mae mai", was responsible for the deaths because this spirit is known to cause "sudden unexpected death syndrome". Hanging red shirts helps ward off the evil entity, but apparently nothing is scarier than a scorned female ghost.

SCIENCE

How can you make hot chocolate taste better?

A)By making it more about vodka and less about chocolate.

B)By having your loved one feed it to you.

C)By adding lots of MSG to the concoction.

D)By drinking it out of an orange cup. That's according to a study conducted at Polytechnic University of Valencia and Oxford University, which tested how colour influences taste buds. Participants tasted hot chocolate samples from cups of different colours - white, cream, red and orange - and reported that it tasted better in orange and cream-coloured cups. The study, published in the Journal of Sensory Studies, supports research that people's perception of taste is influenced by factors that aren't always related to food.

SUBWAY

Australian teenager Matt Corby recently posted a picture of a Subway sandwich online, which has sparked some backlash against the US fast food chain. What did the picture show?

A)Jared the Subway Guy adding lots of fatty ingredients to the sandwiches.

B)A cockroach hiding in between the lettuce and tomatoes.

C)Employees picking their nose before making the sandwich.

D)The "Subway Footlong" sandwich measuring in at only 11 inches. Corby posted the photo of his sandwich next to a tape measure on Subway's Facebook fanpage with the caption "Subway pls respond", setting off a flurry of criticism from social media food activists looking for that extra inch. The restaurant chain responded by saying the "Subway Footlong" is a registered trademark and is "a descriptive name for the sub sold in Subway restaurants and not intended to be a measurement of length."
