From BB to CC (and perhaps DD)

With the BB cream fad possibly reaching saturation point, are CC creams claiming the spot?

From BB to CC (and perhaps DD)

Over the past years, BB creams have been the wunderkind of the make-up world, and every brand has come up with its own concoction of the Blemish Balm - some brands offer over a dozen variations. The excitement, however, is starting to fade, and suddenly we are greeted with the presence of something almost like BB creams, only better. Or is it?

Korean brand Cathy Dolls has recently launched Cathy Doll Speed White CC Cream, offering long-lasting oil control and coverage.

"A CC cream is presented as a new generation BB cream, offering a lighter texture than BB creams, which can be too heavy for Western tastes. CC stands for colour control or colour correction, and it uses pigments to calm high colour with just one uniform shade. CC creams generally, but not always, also offer UV protection, anti-ageing properties and whitening claims," explained Vivienne Rudd, director of Insight, Beauty & Personal Care, Mintel.

It is certainly a big thing. If BB creams could be that successful, why wouldn't we love something that calls itself the new generation of BB creams? CC creams are forecasted to appeal to the consumer desire for novelty. However, their long term prospects are less sure.

"It will be hard for brands to explain why CC creams are different from BB creams, and it is doubtful that they can merchandise both BB creams and CC creams together. So, consumers will probably have to choose one over the other, and I think that BB creams might win in the long run," said Rudd. While CC creams have yet to catch on, some brands are a step ahead and already talking about DD creams.

Rudd said that a couple of DD creams have been available in Asia for some time, but these are positioned very differently to BB and CC creams.

"They are heavy duty face creams or foot creams and the use of the term DD refers to double defence or daily defence. Now, brands that have had Daily Defence creams for some time as part of their skincare portfolios are benefiting from the DD buzz and have placed new emphasis on them. Others are preparing new DD creams to take advantage of the buzz too. At the moment, these products are concentrating on the face, but I think that longer term opportunities exist in the bodycare category."

Chanel is the first luxury make-up brand to launch CC cream. Its Complete Correction cream offers five actions: soothing, moisturising, sun protection, preventing ageing signs and concealing imperfections.

Olay Total Effects Tone Correcting CC Cream has been launched in the US, and hopefully it will hit the Thai market soon.

Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Repair CC Cream is beneficial for skin showing the signs of ageing including fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage.
