Former DJ faces statutory rape charge

A former community radio DJ has been arrested for having a sexual relationship with a minor in Nong Bua Lamphu province.

Crime Suppression Division police arrested Preecha Sriphantabutr, 37, on a warrant alleging statutory rape issued by Nong Bua Lamphu provincial court.

In 2006, Mr Preecha, while working as a DJ at a community radio station in Mukdahan province, allegedly took a 14-year-old girl he had an intimate relationship with to a waterfall in Nong Bua Lamphu province and had sex with her.

However, he was attacked and knocked unconscious by another man at the waterfall. The assailant then proceeded to rape the young girl.

Afterward, Mr Preecha and the girl filed a report with the police. The girl's parents were furious and filed a statutory rape charge against him.

Mr Preecha fled to Nakhon Pathom province, where had since been working as an electrician.

After his arrest, he confessed that he had a sexual relationship with the girl, police said, but insisted that it was consensual and denied knowing that his "girlfriend" was also sexually assaulted.
