Sonthaya: Father's arrest not political

Culture Minister Sonthaya Khunploem believes the arrest of his father Somchai has nothing to do with politics and will not affect his position in the cabinet.

Mr Sonthaya said he learned of his father's arrest from reporters, but not in detail. He said he could not do anything but allow the law to take its course.

Mr Sonthaya said he did not think the arrest was politically motivated.

He believed the arrest would not affect his cabinet position because he was already a minister when the court delivered its verdict on his father's case.

He said he would not use his position to interfere in the work of authorities and had not talked about the matter with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra or Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, who supervises the Royal Thai Police Office.

Mr Sonthaya said he did not know that his father, better known as Kamnan Poh, was in the country.  He knew only that he spent most of his time abroad.

He was not sure if he would have a chance to meet his father today, because he would travel to Chon Buri on duty.
