Security forces in Pattani province were ordered to tighten security measures Wednesday following a spate of bombings in adjoining Narathiwat province, reports said.
The alert follows a warning from various sources of possible insurgent attacks in the municipal area of Pattani on business targets and government installations.
Pol Maj-Gen Ekapop Prasitwattanachai, the Pattani police chief, on Wednesday instructed police and military forces operating in the province, along with administrative officials, to go on higher alert as set down in an agreed plan.
Extra checkpoints were to be set up at all routes leading to district towns to check all kinds of vehicles, with a particular watch for certain licence plate numbers and vehicle descriptions already distributed to security forces.
Foot patrols were to be carried out around the clock.
Each district is required to make a summary operational report every day at 4pm.
If a vehicle suspected of containing explosives is detected, people must be moved away to reduce possible death and injury and a bomb disposal unit called in.
A motorcycle patrol must have two members, not one. A vehicle patrol must have at least four members.
Military and police in plainclothes were being sent out on information gathering tasks.
