Doctor gets 4yrs for teen death

The Chiang Mai Supreme Court has sentenced a doctor convicted of medical malpractice resulting in the death of a teenage girl to four years and three months in prison, a report said on Thursday.

The parents of the victim have also filed a civil lawsuit demanding 12 million baht compensation against the doctor. The case will be heard later.

Siriporn Muima, 17, died during a liposuction procedure, or lipectomy, on her upper thigh area by Dr Charlie Karnjanarak in December 2003. The doctor used date-expired medication which caused the woman to go into shock.

The Chiang Mai Supreme Court issued an arrest warrant for Dr Charlie after he failed to show up at a court hearing scheduled for Dec 19, 2012.

The man later surrendered to police in late December.

The victim's parents told reporters they were satisfied with the verdict and were ready to forgive the doctor.
