Cold spell hits 14 provinces

A total of 14 provinces hit by severe cold weather have been declared emergency disaster zones, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported on Friday.

Altogether 3,917,613 people in 8,365 villages of 123 districts in these provinces were being affected, it said.

The provinces are Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Lamphun, Lampang, Uttaradit, Tak, Phetchabun, Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu and Mukdahan, according to the department.

The department also reported that another 23 provinces were being hit by drought and have been declared emergency disaster zones.

They are Nakhon Sawan, Kalasin, Loei, Udon Thani, Bueng Khan, Maha Sarakham, Yasothon, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Buri Ram, Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phrae, Uttaradit, Phayao, Phichit, Tak and Chanthaburi.
