Ratree released from prison

PHNOM PENH - Thai Patriots Network activist Ratree Pipattanapaiboon was released from jail on Friday after spending two years and one month in Cambodia's Prey Sar prison. She had been granted a royal pardon.

Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Sen granted the pardon to Ratree and reduced the prison term for jailed network leader Veera Somkwamkid by six months on the occasion of the royal funeral of former king Narodom Sihanouk,  which began on Friday.

Ratree was expected to arrive back in Bangkok on Friday night.

Veera said in the Cambodian capital on Friday that he would appeal for a transfer to spend the rest of his prison sentence in Thailand at the end of this month, because he had now served one-third of the sentence, which is a condition for making the request.

Veera was sentenced to eight years and Ratree to six years in jail for espionage and illegal entry by a Cambodian court in 2011.
