Beauty gurus have always advised to go either pink or red when it comes to make-up. The two colours, they say, are clashing tones that should not be seen together, or it will be a messy rivalry for visual attention. This season, however, the trend is reversed. Pink and red are the perfect pair.

Pink & Red Look.

"I love pink and red together - it's a very modern mix," said Bobbi Brown about the Pink & Red Collection for this season. "With this collection, I took an unconventional approach to the season's traditional colour palette. The Pink & Red Collection isn't about matching your lips, cheeks and nails. It's about deliberately mismatching."

It is an effortlessly easy look to achieve. Pick an outfit in either pink or red, and pick a lipstick of the other colour. Wearing a red dress, mismatch it with pink lips. Turn the mismatching up a notch with a contrasting colour on your nails, or paint your nails in both pink and red. It's not just good for Valentine's Day - red is also believed to bring good luck during Chinese New Year.

When the lips are in a bold colour like pink or red, the rest of the face should be clean and subtle.

Keep the face flawless and natural, and go easy on the eye make-up. The bright red-pink combo is enough an attention-getter. The cheeks, however, should have some colour on, but in a sheer and light way.

A tip on picking the right pink and red - look at the boldness of the colour. If you're wearing deep red, find a pink shade that is not too bright and vibrant. For example, cherry red lips will look good with fuchsia clothes, but not so much with baby pink clothes. They should both stand out equally.

Bobbi Brown’s nail polish in Pink Valentine or Valentine Red makes a striking contrast to make-up and outfit of the other colour.
