Police have arrested two women and seized 294,000 methamphetamine pills and 10kg of crystal methamphetamine worth around 90 million baht in Bangkok.
Pol Lt Gen Wanchai Winai Thongsong, the commander of Provincial Police 6, held a press briefing on Thursday to announce the arrest of Juthamas Kerdsang, 30, and Piyapa Ninkuha, 24, and the seizure of the drug shipment, Daily News newspaper reported.
He said the two suspects were part of a major drug gang in the North which police had been keeping an eye on for quite some time.
On Tuesday night police received a tip-off that the gang would leave a large quantity of drugs in room number 114 at the Night Inn Hotel in Pathum Thani’s Muang district, and someone would later pick the drugs up to deliver them to an unidentified customer in Bangkok.
Police deployed to the scene observed the two women arrive in a car and then emerge from the hotel room with two suitcases. They followed the women and pounced on them when they stopped at a toll plaza on the Don Muang Tollway.
Pol Lt Gen Wanchai said the drugs were discovered inside the suitcases, which had been placed in the car’s boot.
Ms Juthamas, who drove the car, admitted to police that she was paid 100,000 baht to transport the drugs by a man identified only as Heer who oversees the drug trade in the North, including at Phitsanulok Provincial Prison. She knew Heer via a middleman and it was the first time she had ever committed a crime, she said.
The woman said Heer told her over the telephone to collect the drugs at the hotel and said he would later inform her where to deliver them. However, police arrested her and Ms Piyapa before he called.
The drug haul was estimated to be worth 90 million baht on the street. Police would investigate further to identify more gang members, Pol Lt Gen Wanchai added.
