Three of the injured victims were male mechanics and the other was the owner of a Mercedes-Benz who was having his car repaired at the garage.

Pol Lt Ekkapoj Boonlom, a police investigator probing the case, said the blast led to a fire which gutted the first floor of the four-storey shop as well as four cars, including the Mercedes-Benz.

It took five fire trucks half an hour to contain the fire.

Shop owner Saranrat Ruangnarongdech, 46, said the Mercedes-Benz owner came to her shop and asked staff to check his car's liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) system, which was malfunctioning.

No mechanics were available to examine his car immediately, which upset the owner, Mrs Saranrat said.

He attempted to do something with the car's gas cylinder on his own before the blast went off, she said.

The Mercedes-Benz owner, who was wounded in the fire, ran out of the shop to hail a taxi after the incident and has not returned, she said.

Mrs Saranrat said she would like the police to help locate the owner of the Mercedes-Benz because she wants him to pay compensation for the damage he caused.

City police chief Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit Thoopkrachang said police were probing the blast.
