Welcome to Guru 's Gate Crasher, your ultimate guide to finding something fresh to do in this big city.
Your weekend starts... now. To get things going, try the Midnight Conspiracy party on tonight (Feb 8) at Sonic. Dubbed as a "laser light show and heavy bass experience", it seems like the antithesis of the Sensation party that came through in Nov (and is rumoured to be returning later this year). And it might be much better with its smaller format and more intimate venue in Sonic, if they have brought their own subwoofers for all that bass that is. Let's see if the venue darling of the indie crowd can branch out a little. Support will come from local residents CMKY, Lingdum and Superrzaaap. Entry is B800.
For an alternative on Sat (Feb 9), try Saints & Sinners at new venue Grease (46-12/13 Sukhumvit Soi 49, 02-662-6120). With the beefy sound system, cool lighting and upstairs options, it might just become a fave (in the smaller category) for Bangkok clubbers and a definite upgrade from Glow. Hosts for the evening are Tim Coates & Saint Vincent. It's not a dress theme though, be warned. The name is a pun on the DJs. The music should be good. Even my microwave would bring a dance floor plugged into this sound system. Doors open at 10pm. Entry is B300, with a drink.
Later on Sat (Feb 9), Trasher are putting on another fringe gala in Trasher "Wedding Crasher". It's a self-defeatist-themed party for those who "can't have their own wedding". Awww. Dudesweet might have beat them to it with their Dragsweet parties already, in 2011 covering the British Royal Wedding. Still, it should be the gay and lesbian community at its best. Paron is apparently being married off to fellow Trasher icon Jenny, who stars in all their music video mock-ups in what might be the ultimate Trasher pin-up hook-up. Let's hope Paron's oversized boyfriend isn't around or things could get ugly. It's on at Sonic. Shoot for an 11pm arrival. Entry is B200 with a free drink.
To ease off your hangover on Sat (Feb 9), head to Duck & Noodle's Pool Party. Known more for their boat bashes and late night offerings, the crew have retreated to the pool for this instalment. But it will be different to the strutfest that the other glam-oriented pool parties are going for. How indie can a pair of boardshorts get? Let's see. It's on at Leapfrog (Ramada Encore Hotel, Sukhumvit Soi 10), from 3pm to midnight. Music will come from their regular guys - This & That, Dane and DJ Denial. Entry is B300, with a free drink, and food available for purchase. BYO floaties and other inflatables. There should be prizes for best floating device.
Also on tonight (Feb 8) is a big one for the bass-leaning punters with Doc Daneeka spinning his rumbling bottom end at Glow (96/4-5 Sukhumvit Soi 23, 02-261-4446, www.glowbkk.com). He's from Wales but resides in Berlin, as you might, and is known for his innovation in the genre and for his label Ten Thousand Yen. The gig is presented by Homebass Communications and Phatfunk, who will offer deck support from their personnel. Entry is B400 with a drink. Looks good.
