Furby scam suspect released

Furby scam suspect released

A woman accused of running an online scam selling Furby electronic robot toys was released on bail on Friday evening, reports said.

The Criminal Court agreed to release Chonnikant Taichilasasoontorn, 27, on bail of 1.7 million baht put up by her father.

The woman stands accused of using a 16-year-old girl to post advertisements on Instagram offering the furry toys for 2,990 baht each.

The Toys 'R' Us chain in Thailand was offering Furbys at 3,995 baht on Wednesday, according to its Facebook page.

At least 44 buyers ordered toys through the teenager. The orders, many of them bulk buys, totalled more than four million baht.

None of the toys were delivered.

Police said they would identify and track down other accomplices in the scheme.

Ms Chonnikant, 27, was questioned by police on Thursday. She denied running the scheme as the money had been transferred to the "real seller" who is said to be a model named Natt.

The Criminal Court also approved a warrant for the arrest of Kanchana Jabang, another person who has received money via the teenage girl.
