PM sees year of confidence creation

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on Saturday that she wants 2013 to be a year of creating confidence in Thailand.

Speaking on the "Yingluck Government Meets the People" weekly programme on NBT, Ms Yingluck said overall economic indicators showed that the economy was growing at a healthy rate.

Domestic consumption and purchasing power were increasing, and more spending had helped spur economic growth, she added.

She attributed the improvement in people's purchasing power to the government's stimulus policies, including the 300-baht daily minimum wage nationwide and the 15,000-baht minimum monthly salary for university graduates.

Continuing economic expansion had restored confidence in Thailand among foreign investors as well. This was evidenced by the fact that leaders of several countries had paid official visits to Thailand over the past months, she said.

Thailand's appeal as a production bases was underlined by the announcement last week by Honda Motor that it would invest 17 billion baht in a new plant in Prachin Buri. The Japanese carmaker plans to produce 120,000 units annually, said the prime minister.

Ms Yingluck acknowledged concerns about the impact of large foreign investment inflows, most of which have gone into the country's stock and bond markets. She said she wished to see foreign investment flow into the production sector, not for short-term profit taking.

Investment in the production sector would a factor that helps direct the economy toward sustainable economic growth, she added.
