A fire ripped through four warehouses of a foam and plastic products manufacturer in Chon Buri's Si Racha district yesterday, causing about 50 million baht in damage.

UP IN SMOKE: Smoke emerges from burning warehouses belonging to SPI Group in Chon Buri’s Si Racha district yesterday morning. The fire caused an estimated 50 million baht in damage.

More than 10 fire trucks were called to the warehouses belonging to SPI Group but the blaze, which started about 8.30am, took firefighters more than an hour to control.

Phaitoon Boonta, who works for the company, said he and around 10 coworkers had just begun their shifts when they heard several noises that sounded like explosions.

They saw flames spreading quickly from a warehouse. The workers tried to control the fire and called for help from the fire brigade and police.

As the fire roared through the warehouses, people in the area noted a strong chemical smell, raising fears of a chemical leak, but the smell subsided after the blaze was brought under control.

There were no reports of injuries as the fire broke out during a shift change. About 100 workers had just left the factory while people on the next shift had not yet entered it.

A preliminary estimate of the damage was put at 50 million baht. Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
