Big three earmarked for Las Vegas

Thailand's top three welterweight Muay Thai stars _ Kem Sitsongpeenong, Yodsaenklai Fairtex and Buakaw Por Pramuk _ are on the hit list for a world championship fight night in Las Vegas on April 12.

Kem Sitsongpeenong, right, is ready for his rematch with Yodsaenklai Fairtex.

US promoter Gary Shaw is set to stage a Muay Thai night of champions with a live TV telecast back to Thailand for the Songkran weekend.

And on July 13, Shaw will promote the WBC strawweight boxing title defence of Xiong Zhao Zhong, China's first and only professional world boxing champion. The event will be broadcast live through mainland China to more than 120 million viewers.

Speaking in Sydney, where his IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale comfortably beat fellow indigenous boxer Anthony Mundine to retain his crown, Shaw elaborated on his plan for a weekend of super-fights in Las Vegas.

"As fate would have it, the weekend of championship fight nights falls on the Thai New Year holiday and a Friday night [April 12] which would be a good time for a big Muay Thai event in Vegas," Shaw explained.

Shaw also said he would target two of the top three Thais _ Kem, Yodsaenklai and Buakaw _ to headline the main event, which would include two-and-a-half hours of quality Muay Thai fighting, featuring some of the best American Muay Thai professionals.

Yodsaenklai Fairtex.

"I've been told that Kem was not well and very down on energy for his last fight loss against Yodsaenklai in Thailand," Shaw said.

"So there's every reason why Muay Thai fans around the world would be rapt with a Yods and Kem rematch.

"Kem's ready for a glorious rematch and if Yods declines then the invitation goes to Buakaw."

Kem and Yodsaenklai are current WBC and WMC world Muay Thai champions while Buakaw is the reigning Thai Fight welterweight title-holder and could easily bulk up to fight as a super-welterweight.

Shaw is finalising the July 13 event and the opponent for Zhong is likely to be South African Hekkie Budler.

Thailand's WBC Muay Thai lightweight champion Jomthong Chuwattana, who is also the OPBF boxing champion, is on the world title card to defend his All-Asia boxing championship against a top Filipino contender.

"Zhong is a massive superstar in China and the TV audience will set a new record for live views in China," Shaw said.

"This is a boxing event that will make history for China live from Las Vegas.

"Jomthong is an added attraction as he's a famous Muay Thai fighter and now a top-ranked world boxer."

Meanwhile, boxing commentators have been near unanimous in their criticism of Floyd Mayweather's decision to fight low-profile American boxer Devon Alexander.

Mayweather's next opponent was to be either Robert Guerrero or Canelo Alvarez _ both a competitive match-up _ while fighting Alexander is expected to be little more than a jog in the park for the money man.

Shaw said he wasn't surprised that Mayweather went for an easy fight.

"There's a realignment of the boxing planet going on," he said.

"Mayweather's and Pacquiao's days in the limelight are coming to an end. They're now in a decline.

"But the big losers are boxing fans, who would have been in heaven had the two top middleweights of a generation fought each other while still in their prime."
