The man, who owned the building, was identified as Yongyuth Siwapinyo, 58.
His body was found on the second floor of the building, which sold gold paper and other items used to make offerings during the Chinese New Year.
It took more than an hour for firefighters to bring the blaze under control as the building was located in a narrow alley nearly inaccessible to firetrucks.
Rescue workers managed to save Pornthip Sakultonpho, 44, the wife of the victim, and Pongsak Siwapinyo, 20, and Apiradee Siwapinyo, 18, the couple's children.
All three were unhurt.
Mrs Pornthip told police that she lit some jossticks as part of Chinese New Year offerings early yesterday and then went back to her bedroom.
She came out again about 4am and saw the fire spreading rapidly on the ground floor.
