Yingluck: No decision yet on curfew

No decision will be made on whether to impose a curfew in the southernmost border provinces at today's meeting of the National Security Council (NSC), Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on Monday.

The prime minister said the meeting would take reports on the latest developments in the three provinces, but would not decide whether to impose a  curfew in parts of the region.

The curfew issue would be considered by the Centre for Implementation of Policies and Strategies for Resolving Problems in the Southern Provinces on Friday, Feb 15, she said.

Ms Yingluck stressed that in principle a curfew would be imposed only in areas where authorities have already implemented other measures to the best of their ability.  If a curfew was seen as being really necessary, the authorities must first ask the local people for their opinions.

"At this stage, the committee should be allowed to look into details, including the number of people who would be involved and the equipment to be used," she said. "If necessary, cooperation will be sought from the local people."
