POLICE STATIONS SAGA
National police chief Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew was angered yesterday by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) chief's plan to summon him for questioning in relation to the probe into the unfinished construction of police stations.
DSI chief Tarit Pengdith should have clearly stated the grounds on which he was to be summoned to meet the DSI investigators, Pol Gen Adul said.
He was responding to earlier comments by Mr Tarit in which he said the national police chief as well as his predecessor, Pol Gen Priewpan Damapong, would be summoned for questioning.
If Mr Tarit wanted any information from, him he should have clearly said what that was, Pol Gen Adul said, adding that he was actually a victim of the problems surrounding the police station construction deal, not a suspect.
He and Pol Gen Priewpan were high-ranking officials and it was rather insensitive for the DSI chief to simply say in public that he and Pol Gen Priewpan would be summoned for questioning in the suspected corruption case.
"Please don't exploit this crisis
[of the national police] as a tool to claim credit," Pol Gen Adul said.
Thawal Mankhong, a special case specialist of the DSI, said three executives of PCC Development and Construction Co, the sole contractor in the police station construction project, who had been questioned recently by the DSI, refused to provide any information.
They insisted on having their lawyers answer questions on their behalf, Pol Lt Col Thawal said.
Throughout this week, the DSI investigators would be questioning contractors hired by PCC to construct the buildings at the police stations in the North where it had won the contract from the Royal Thai Police.
After that the DSI would expand its investigation to the Northeast, said Pol Lt Col Thawal.
Pol Gen Adul, meanwhile, called a meeting for this Friday with the chiefs of all 396 police stations nationwide who were affected by the unfinished construction project.
The meeting was aimed at determining how to ease the negative impacts of the project, he said.
