The army has announced a 24-hour curfew until 6am Thursday in a total of six tambons in two provinces following the failed militant attack at a marine base in Bacho district of Narathiwat around 1am Wednesday.
Fourth Army commander Udomchai Thammasarotrat said the curfew will be implemented in four tambons of Bacho district of Narathiwat and two tambons in Mai Kaen district of Pattani. The curfew covers a 5km radius around the military base in tambon Tare Nua of Bacho district of Narathiwat.
The military found the bodies of 16 fully armed militants in military-type uniforms immediately after the attack on the base, which houses 60 marines. It is expected that more bodies will be found later.
Three of the bodies were identified as Maroso Chantrawadee, a leader of Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) and wanted on an arrest warrant for the killing of Muslim schoolteacher Chonlathee Charoenchol, and Saduee Ali and Sabiri Lotase.
There were no marine casualties, a spokesman said.
