Evans replaces Vidic for United at Real

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic was left out of their team for Wednesday's Champions League last 16 clash against Real Madrid.

Manchester United's Northern Irish defender Jonny Evans celebrates after scoring during the English Premier League football match between Manchester United and Newcastle United at Old Trafford in Manchester, north-west England on December 26, 2012. Evans will replace defender Nemanja Vidic who was left out of their team for Wednesday's Champions League last 16 clash against Real Madrid.

Manager Alex Ferguson opted for Jonny Evans to partner Rio Ferdinand at the heart of the United defence for the first leg clash.

Vidic, who has been troubled by a knee injury this season, was not even in the matchday squad.

"We try and manage Rio and Nemanja. If we had had an extra day, then it would have been alright. But he played in a tough match at Old Trafford on Sunday and it would have been too much of a risk for us," said Ferguson.
