NSC: No need for curfew in South

National Security Council (NSC) secretary-general Paradorn Pattanathabutr said he believes there is no need to impose a new curfew in the restive South.

Lt Gen Paradorn said before attending a meeting of security agencies that announcing a curfew in some areas in Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala was unnecessary as the overall situation in the southern border provinces was  improving.

The NSC had sounded out the reactions of officials on the ground and most were confident that existing laws and regulations were sufficient to fight the insurgency in the region.

The NSC chief favoured more efforts to bolster cooperation from local people in the three provinces.

The government will decide the curfew issue on Friday afternoon in talks chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, who proposed a limited curfew last week.
