Southern students oppose curfew

PATTANI - Students gathered at the Pattani campus of Prince of Songkla University on Friday in opposition to the proposed imposition of a curfew in parts of the far South, a report said.

Students raised signs express their opposition to a curfew, and announced a proposal that they want the government to consider:

1. The government needs to carefully review the proposal for a curfew in the South.

2. It needs to create political space for groups with perspectives opposing the government's views.

3. It needs to provide local people with opportunities to express their points of view on a solution to the violence in the South.

The PSU student network also encouraged other students to play an active role in solving the violence and conflict in the southern provinces.

A meeting of security agencies led by Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung in Bangkok on Friday afternoon was due to make a decision on a curfew.
