Nurse pleads ignorance

The nurse travelling with convicted murderer and former fugitive Somchai Khunploem at the time of his arrest last month claims she was unaware he was in Thailand until she received a call that day to accompany him to hospital.

Walai: Didn’t know Somchai was home

Walai Kwanjit was questioned by officers from the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) yesterday.

She told Pol Lt Col Sing Singhadet that she did not know Somchai, who is better known as Kamnan Poh, had been staying at his Chon Buri home until she met him on Jan 30, the day he was arrested.

Ms Walai said she received a call from Somchai on Jan 30 asking her to travel with him to hospital in Bangkok.

She was told to wait for a vehicle to pick her up and then went with him to Samitivej Srinakarind Hospital.

Two other men, Vinai Ponpaiparn and Prasong Charoenpol, were also in the car.

Somchai was apprehended on his way back to Chon Buri.

Ms Walai was formerly a nurse at the health service centre in Chon Buri's tambon Saen Suk municipality. Somchai is the former mayor of Saen Suk.

Mr Vinai, a close aide to Somchai and kamnan of tambon Samet, and Mr Prasong were earlier questioned by the CSD. They also claimed they were unaware Somchai was back in Thailand.
