Bangkok Port staff kick off strike action

Workers at Bangkok Port stopped working overtime starting yesterday evening to pressure for the dismissal of the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) director-general.

About 300 workers belonging to the PAT union rallied at the PAT headquarters in Klong Toey district yesterday and vowed to maintain the stoppage at least until Monday, when the board meets.

They want the board to remove PAT director-general Viroj Chongchansittho for his alleged failure to compromise over an overtime dispute with employees.

Suwat Asawathongkul, chairman of Bangkok Shipowners and Agents Association, said the protest could delay shipment of 15,000 containers to Singapore, which could cause severe damage to Thai exporters.
