The government is worried about dry weather that has hit many provinces and aims to develop plans to prevent it in the long term, says Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
Speaking on the weekly "Yingluck Government Meets the People" programme on NBT, she said she discussed the situation on Friday with governors of 29 affected provinces and officials of various ministries.
"I directed the ministries to come up with a long-term plan for sustainable water resource management to ensure there would be sufficient water for household use across the country," she said.
The government's 350-billion-baht water resources management and flood control programme would also include measures to prevent drought, she added.
The single command system, proved effective in dealing with the floods in late 2011, will be used to deal with any other natural disasters, including drought, she said.
Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi said on the same programme that the water management project aimed to make conditions in the country better.
"I insist that with the existing technology and marketing opportunity, this project can be done," he said. "It will help prevent recurrence of devastating floods and would supply water to provinces facing drought. Thailand will definitely be better in the next five years."
