Security personell overnight also found five improvised explosive devices contained in condoms at a fresh market and public park in Pattani's Muang district. They contained lighters and digital watches.

On Saturday night and early Sunday, many explosive devices were planted in different areas of Muang district but only one of them exploded, police said. The clock tower explosion occurred hours later.

In Pattani's Yarang district, a living quarters of a village defence team, a mobile telephone signal tower and five closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs) were set on fire in arson attacks.

Authorities said they felt the attacks were a demonstration by the insurgents that they were still a threat after a major victory by marines last Wednesday that left 16 militants dead and four more captured following a raid on a marine base.

About 80 heavily armed gunmen stormed the base in Narathiwat province on Wednesday morning in a major assault that resulted in the deaths of at least 16 assailants and the capture of four others.
