The incident took place at an illegal street bar named "Chill Chill” located on a footpath near Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Rajabhat University in Muang district at about 2.30am.

Police said a white Toyota Vios driven by Donnawat Thamsanong, 20, ploughed through tables and chairs and into the bar’s counter area after he lost control of the vehicle.

Eight customers were struck by the car and were taken to hospital. One of the injured, a bar waitress, was later pronounced dead.

Mr Donnawat, who appeared to be intoxicated according to police, was accompanied by three passengers, two men and a woman.

Suradej Poomchaiduang, 30, a customer who escaped injury in the crash, told police that the car was being driven at high speed, and when it came near the bar, the driver was "drifting" – making his car spin and skid at high speed – in what he believed was an attempt to show off to women at the bar.

A very loud sound was heard from the car before it veered into the footpath and slammed into people and objects, he said.
