Former Asean secretary-general Surin Pitsuwan has condemned negative campaigns for the Bangkok governor election being circulated online.
Mr Surin referred to a banner showing photos of Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and himself. The text in the poster said: "Vote for MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra, get the same party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva; vote for Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen, get a chance to have a new party leader Surin Pitsuwan."
The poster implies that if MR Sukhumbhand loses the governor election then Abhisit will have to resign.
The poster has been circulating on Facebook for about a week.
Mr Surin said he had no idea who concocted the campaign. He said he disapproved of the negative idea which he called a "below-the-belt shenanigan" and a "despicable political connivance".
He said that MR Sukhumbhand has done a good job at the helm of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, considering the circumstances he found himself in.
The former Asean secretary-general and former foreign minister from the Democrat Party said he hoped MR Sukhumbhand and his campaign team would be able to restrain themselves from the dangerous trend of negative, downward spiralling campaigns.
"The country is sliding into a political abyss, with many cliffs ahead of us," Mr Surin said.
As a professor emeritus at Thammasat University and visiting scholar at the King Prachadhipok Institute, he is willing to join any group in developing the country, he said.
