Man arrested for rape of Scot student

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT - Police have arrested a 26-year-old man for the rape of a 20-year-old British student.

Pongpat Bowsoey has confessed to the rape of a 20-year-old British student in Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Pongpat Bowsoey, 26, confessed to police that he was out eating late Friday night when he saw the Scottish woman being escorted out of a restaurant by a security guard, Khaosod newspaper reported on its website.

The woman, who was drunk, later tripped and fell as she walked up the stairs of a shopping mall. He assisted her, offering some tissues to clean an injury sustained in the fall.

He said the woman was wearing a short skirt. He was drunk and became aroused by her presence.

The man admitted he dragged the woman into a dark corner and raped her.

Mr Pongpat said he failed to climax and decided to go home, but shortly after he changed his mind and returned to the same spot. The woman was still lying drunk on the ground so he raped her again and then went home.

Police said they have questioned witnesses, and have evidence from the victim's medical examination and footage from a nearby security camera.

When the victim was asked to identify the suspect, she did not remember Mr Pongpat's face, as she was intoxicated when she was raped, but was able to recognise his body shape.

The woman also thought that she was raped by two different men, said Pol Col Sompong Tiparpakul, superintendent of Nakhon Si Thammarat police station.

He added that the suspect faces further legal proceedings.
